    Write Together with the NYCWP and Gateway Recreational Area and National Park

    October 20, 2020

    In the tradition of the Writing Project, we will offer a variety of interactive prompts to support writing as well as the ever-present opportunity to let your pen take you in any direction. We will conclude our session together by asking for your input about the best ways for us to continue to write together and how we can support you as we all move forward during these times.

    Continued from the Spring, join us for another evening of writing together. We will be inspired by photography of the beautiful natural landscapes, historical sites, and recreational areas of the Gateway Recreation Areas across New Jersey’s shores and New York City’s boroughs.

    When: November 6, 2020, 7:00pm

    NYCWP Writers’ Residency Fall 2020

    September 23, 2020

    The New York City Writing Project (NYCWP) has designed the Writers’ Residency to foster the teacher-as-writer as they engage in an intensive and intimate writing workshop experience. Writers will read, write, workshop, and learn together to improve their writing craft and explore publication options. Writers of all levels are encouraged to apply. Past residency participants may join this residency program.

    When: October 12 – December 14, 2020

    • 6:00 – 9:00pm on Wednesdays or Thursdays
    • 9 total sessions

    Where: Online, Zoom invitation to follow

    Cost: $300

    The residency offers participants the opportunity to:

    • Enjoy dedicated time to write in the genre of their choice;
    • Explore and improve their craft in a community of writers;
    • Consider aspects of craft, style, and form;
    • Engage in focused workshop sessions to provide and receive feedback;
    • Read selections chosen with their writing style in mind;
    • Study craft essays and try out new techniques together;
    • Learn about publication opportunities with the NYCWP and elsewhere;
    • Earn CTLE credits for participation;
    • And more!

    Call for Submissions: Stories Out of School Contest

    July 28, 2020

    The Academy for Teachers created its Stories Out of School flash fiction contest to inspire honest, unsentimental stories about teachers and the rich and complex world of schools.

    The winning story comes with a $1000 prize and publication in the print edition of A Public Space. Runners-up receive a subscription to A Public Space, our partner in the contest. 

    This year’s judge is Jonathan Lethem, the author of eleven novels, including The Fortress of Solitude, Chronic City, The Feral Detective, and Motherless Brooklyn, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award and last year became a major motion picture starring Ed Norton.

    Submission Guidelines

    • The story’s protagonist, or its narrator, must be a K-12 teacher. 
    • Stories must be between 6 and 749 words and previously unpublished.
    • You need not be a teacher to submit, but you do need to be over the age of eighteen.
    • Use 12-point Arial font and double space.
    • One submission per writer.
    • All submissions must be PDFs.
    • Sentimentality is discouraged and education jargon is forbidden.

    Deadline for submissions: Tuesday, September 1, 2020.

    Youth Voices Collaborative Writing Contest

    July 28, 2020

    Know a youth who keeps a journal or loves to write?  Encourage them to share their perspective in this writing contest for young people who have had experience with the juvenile justice system. Their opinion can help the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) create better experiences for other young people who come through the system!

    Four winners will each receive a prize of $250.

    Who is eligible: Youth ages 14-19 with current or previous juvenile or criminal justice experience.

    Youth must write an essay answering one of two essay questions. (See below.)

    Their complete entry, including the form and essay, must be submitted online by September 1, 2020. 

    CHOOSE ONE ESSAY TOPIC. PLEASE KEEP YOUR ESSAY BETWEEN 250-500 WORDS.

    Essay #1:  Write a letter to the head of the facility or program you were in. What is a change the institution can make to better support youth while they are inside and prepare them for release? Why would this make a difference? How would it help young people?
    or
    Essay #2:  Write a story about a time when a staff member asked the right question or did the right thing. What did they do or say? How did if help? How did it make you feel?

    The NYCWP Writers’ Residency Summer 2020

    In the style of Writers’ Residencies, the New York City Writing Project (NYCWP) has designed the Summer Writers’ Residency to foster the teacher-as-writer as they engage in an intensive and intimate writing workshop experience. Writers will read, write, workshop, and learn together to improve their writing craft and explore publication options. Writers of all levels are encouraged to apply. Past residency participants may join this residency program.

    When: July 13 – August 6, 2020, 10am – 1pm

    Who: Two Cohorts of Writers meeting on either Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs

    Where: Online, on Zoom

    Cost: $300 for Summer Residency

    The residency offers participants the opportunity to:

    • Enjoy dedicated time to write in the genre of their choice;
    • Explore and improve their craft in a community of writers;
    • Consider aspects of craft, style, and form;
    • Engage in focused workshop sessions to provide and receive feedback;

    The NYCWP is here for you!

    Dear NYCWP Community, 

    I’m reaching out today to let you know that the NYCWP staff and teacher consultants are thinking of all of you. We know that now more than ever we need one another to navigate these very challenging days. 

    To meet the many needs of our community and to support those seeking community now, we want you to know that the NYCWP is developing opportunities to connect so we can continue to support you as you develop ways to continue teaching remotely. 

    We’re also very anxious to connect as a community, so we can support one another by sharing our stories, ideas, and practices, and most importantly, to find ways to write together.
